How this mock works

From January 2026, TOEFL iBT Writing no longer uses the old Integrated essay and Independent essay. The enhanced section has three shorter tasks that take about 23 minutes in total.

You type everything on screen. Build a Sentence checks accurate grammar and word order. Write an Email and Academic Discussion check real communication — clarity, organisation, vocabulary, and grammar — under time pressure.

In this mock, a human examiner reviews your email and discussion responses in depth and also comments on patterns that show up across the section.

The three tasks

Build a Sentence

About 10 items · ~6 minutes

You see mixed-up words or short chunks. Put them in the correct order to make a complete, grammatical English sentence (or question).

Focus on:

Word order and subject–verb agreement
Question vs statement structure
Using only the words you need (sometimes one extra word appears)

This task is about accuracy, not long writing. Work carefully but keep moving — you have several items to finish.

Write an Email

1 email · ~7 minutes · often ~80–120 words

You read a short campus or everyday scenario, then write an email that covers the required points (usually three). Tone should fit the situation — polite to a professor, clearer and more direct to a classmate or office.

A strong email usually has:

A greeting and a clear purpose in the opening
A body that answers each required point
A polite closing and your name

Cover every bullet in the prompt. Specific details beat vague general statements.

Academic Discussion

1 post · ~10 minutes · typically 100+ words

You join an online class discussion. A professor posts a question; you may also see short student replies. Write your own contribution: state a clear position and support it.

A strong post usually:

Answers the professor’s question directly
Gives a reason and a concrete example
Sounds natural in an academic forum (not a memorised essay template)

Engage the topic thoughtfully. You can agree, disagree, or add a new angle — just explain why.
